Ben Smith wins Horticulturalist of the year

Last night, after weeks of preparation and contests that tested knowledge and skill, Ben Smith emerged as the winner of Horticulturalist of the year for 2011.  This follows his earlier victory in Rotorua, for the title of Horticulture NZ’s Young Grower of the year.

Ben had to undertake a significant research proposal as part of the competition and he investigated the use of a bio digester that could turn the waste plant material into methane gas that could be reused back into the glasshouse heating systems. The last two days he then had to undertake an intensive series of activities and interviews with the judging panel, culminating in a 3 minute speech to more than 200 guests at the final dinner and awards presentation last night.

The team at Status are delighted for Ben and proud to have him recognised for his abilities.  Jeff Wesley, MD Turners and Growers was among the Prize presenters on stage to award Ben his grand prize.  T&G were a major sponsor of this event, recognising the importance of developing and recognising talent in our industry.

 Well done Ben.
