Our History
Leaders in Greenhouse Technology

Status began as a vision in 1993 by John Becroft, a second-generation tomato grower and Garry Hemmingson, a packhouse manager.

Fragmented Industry
It was at a time when the New Zealand tomato industry was fragmented by many individual smallholdings, yet the supermarket industry was demanding 365 day of the year streamlined services.

These retailers were also expecting to develop strong preferred supplier partnerships direct with growers.

Coming Together as STATUS
John and Garry were joined by three, equally visionary tomato growers, plus a glasshouse builder. As STATUS, this team pioneered the bringing to New Zealand of world advanced growing technologies and glasshouses designs. Within a short time, the first 5 hectare project was underway. By 2002 their successful venture had grown to 15 hectares with further plans for expansion.

Progress for STATUS
During 2002, but still keeping the STATUS name, the directors merged their operation with the third generation Tregidga family from Mangere, known as PTO Growers Ltd (See more about PTO under Production - NZ Greenhouse History). In turn, this merged operation sold their shareholdings to Turners & Growers Fresh Ltd. The newly structured entity remains a stand alone company and continues to grow and expand under the skilled auspice of John Becroft as Managing Director
